SALARY COMPARISON FOR ACADEMIC LIBRARIANS

There are 2 basic problems with the "group of 10" universities as a good comparative peer group for McGill librarians in terms of salaries:

1) Librarians do not have academic status in a number of these universities. On this basis: Université de Montreal, Université Laval, University of Waterloo, and University of Western Ontario need to be excluded.

REASON: Librarians with academic status have substantially different "job descriptions" and work expectations. Academic status for librarians means performing in three areas to meet requirements for tenure and rank: work performance/librarianship, service to the university, contributions to research or the profession. Librarians working in universities without academic status need only perform in the first area.

2) Rank structures for librarians with academic status can vary widely. McGill has 3 ranks in the tenure stream (Assistant Librarian, Associate Librarian, Librarian), plus Sessional Librarians who are non-tenure track. University of British Columbia librarians do not have a rank structure and so are excluded on this basis.

REASON: Universities whose librarians have fewer than 3 ranks cannot be compared with McGill on a per-rank basis.

The result is that librarians at only 4 universities in the group of 10 can be compared with McGill:

University of Toronto
Queen's University
McMaster University
University of Alberta

Although some of these universities have 4 or 5 librarian ranks, reading their promotion procedures and expectations results in suitable mappings to McGill's rank structure. Four ranks is the most common variation, with the lowest 2 ranks being equivalent to our Assistant Librarian rank.

UNIVERSITY RANKS
McGill Assistant Lib. Associate Lib. Librarian
Alberta Lib.1 - General Lib.2 - Operations Lib.3 - Admin.
McMaster Lib.I + Lib.II Lib.III Lib.IV + Lib.V
Queen's General Lib. + Assistant Lib. Associate Lib. Librarian
Toronto Lib.I + Lib.II Lib.III Lib.IV
Calgary Lib.I + Lib.II Lib.III Lib.IV + Lib.V
Dalhousie Lib.1 + Lib.2 Lib.3 Lib.4
Manitoba General Lib. + Assistant Lib. Associate Lib. Librarian
Saskatchewan Lib.I + Lib.II Lib.III Lib.IV
York Assistant Lib. Associate Lib. Senior Lib.

PROPOSAL for a procedure for selecting a comparison group.

Since 4 universities is too few to form a suitable comparison group, I propose we add to the group universities whose libraries are CARL members, and preferably are also ARL members and in the MacLean's "Medical/Doctoral" category, and where neither of the exclusions above hold.

MacLean's has 15 members in the "Medical/Doctoral" group, all of which are CARL members, 6 are not in the group of 10. As librarians at Université de Sherbrooke (as in all the Quebec francophone universities) do not have academic status, there are 5 candidates for our comparison group:

University of Manitoba an ARL member / ACAD Status
University of Saskatchewan an ARL member / ACAD Status
Dalhousie University ACAD Status
University of Calgary ACAD Status
(X University of Ottawa incomparable rank structure)

MacLean's has 12 members in the "Comprehensive" group, all of which are CARL members, 11 are not already in the group of 10. UQAM needs to be excluded as librarians do not have academic status, leaving another 10 candidates for our comparison:

York University an ARL member / ACAD Status
(X University of Guelph an ARL member, BUT incomparable rank structure)
University of Victoria ACAD Status
Memorial University ACAD Status
Carleton University ACAD Status
(X Simon Fraser University incomparable rank structure)
University of Windsor ACAD Status
University of Regina ACAD Status
Concordia University ACAD Status
(X University of New Brunswick incomparable rank structure)

RESULTING comparison "group of 10 academic libraries"

McGill University M/D; an ARL member / ACAD Status
University of Alberta M/D; an ARL member / ACAD Status
McMaster University M/D; an ARL member / ACAD Status
Queen's University M/D; an ARL member / ACAD Status
University of Toronto M/D; an ARL member / ACAD Status
+ University of Calgary M/D; ACAD Status
+ Dalhousie University M/D; ACAD Status
+ University of Manitoba M/D; an ARL member / ACAD Status
+ University of Saskatchewan M/D; an ARL member / ACAD Status
+ York University Comp; an ARL member / ACAD Status

Note: the original "group of 10" had 9 ARL members (Université de Montréal is not ARL); 9 MacLean's M/D, 1 Comp. All of both groups are CARL members.
