ARDA:  American Religion Data Archive
The American Religion Data Archive collects quantitative data sets for the study of American religion.  The ARDA was established to meet four goals:  Preserve data, Improve access to data, Increase use of data and allow comparisons across data files.  The American Religion Data Archive is maintained by the Department of Sociology, Pennsylvania State University.  The Archives are supported by the Lilly Endowment Inc.  Free of charge data files can be downloaded by users.

CANSIMcomprises over 700,000 time series, allows you to download data in various formats including SPSS, Shazam, Spreadsheet and plain ASCII. The database is updated on a weekly basis. (access limited to McGill users only)

CRSP
The Center for Research in Security Prices Database provides access to NYSE/AMEX/Nasdaq Daily and Monthly Security Prices and other historical data related to over 20,000 companies. This data is compiled and distributed quarterly, by the Center for Research in Security Prices, Graduate School of Business, University of Chicago. (access limited to McGill users only)

Canada: Federal Electoral District Profile 
The profiles appear in an easy-to-use format, in both English and French. Statistics Canada is making available statistical profiles of all 301 federal electoral districts. The Federal electoral district profile includes data from the 1996 Census of Population and a mapping feature.  Each profile contains data on four major components: population and demographic characteristics; education; income and work; and families and dwellings.

Canada: Historical Statistics of Canada 
The second edition of Historical statistics of Canada was jointly produced by the Social Science             Federation of Canada and Statistics Canada in 1983. This volume contains about 1,088 statistical             tables on the social, economic and institutional conditions of Canada from the start of Confederation in 1867 to the mid-1970s. The tables are arranged in sections with an introduction explaining the content of each section, the principal sources of data for each table, and general explanatory notes regarding the statistics. In most cases, there is sufficient description of the  individual series to enable the reader to use them without consulting the numerous basic sources referenced in the publication. 

The electronic version of this historical publication is accessible on the Internet site of Statistics  Canada as a free downloadable document: text as HTML pages and all tables as individual  spreadsheets in a comma delimited format (CSV)(which allows online viewing or downloading). 

Canadian Statistics : Canadian statistics a free tabular data on aspects of Canada's economy, land,
people and government.

Canadian Census Analyser and Micro data files provides access to Canadian Census Data. It is currently being enhanced to provide more information and more options for users. The Census Analyser now includes access to the 1991 Census Tables and the 1971,1981, 1986 and 1991 Individual Microdata Files. Formatting options for SAS and SPSS users have also been added. Citibaseis a macroeconomic database that originated at Citicorp Database Services. It is currently known as DRI Basic Economics and is maintained by DRI/McGraw-Hill. The database contains over 6000 monthly, quarterly, or annual time series ending with the latest available observation and going back to 1946, if available. The data are on a national level, taken from over one hundred U.S. Government and private publications. All revisions (of data, concepts, and coverage) made by source agencies are incorporated into the databank. (access limited to McGill users only)

Edudata Canada
Edudata Canada develops user-friendly research databases of educational data from British Columbia and elsewhere. Edudata works with qualified researchers to facilitate access to information about education, focusing on the K-12 sector, subject to privacy and confidentiality guidelines. We also provide estimates of our service charges for your research and/or grant proposals. 

The data download centre includes data (in SPSS format) on the following subjects: BC School District Expenditures, Trends in International Math and Science Study (TIMSS). 

EIU Country Data:
The main EIU CountryData database covers 117 countries and 40 regional aggregates. There are yearly and quarterly indicators on every country. Monthly data and an extended range of quarterly data are available on 49 developed and large emerging markets. 

Each of the 117 countries, as well as an additional 64 countries which do not appear in the main database, is also the subject of an EIU country outlook. Country outlooks are concise 800-1,000-word summaries of the Economist Intelligence Unit's short-term thinking on a country. Each outlook contains nine sections--overview, domestic politics, international relations, policy trends, international assumptions, economic growth, inflation, exchange rates and external sector. Each section highlights the most salient parts of the EIU's forecast for

E-Staton the web, Statistics Canada's site designed to bring an enormous warehouse of timely, reliable and accurate data on Canada and Canadians for use in .(access limited to McGill users only)

FAOSTATis an online and multilingual database currently containing over 1 million time series records covering international statistics in agriculture, nutrition, fisheries, forestry, population, etc.

FEDSTATS Regional Statistics Statistical web site of the US government. Includes stats. of more than 70 federal agencies.

FERRET:  Data Ferret is the  Federal Electronic Research & Review Extraction Tool (Census USA) that offers access to microdata and macrodata. Currently data from the following surveys are available: Current Population Survey (CPS) Basic Monthly Survey, January 1997 to present; CPS March Supplement, 1992-1997.

Shortly, data from the following surveys will be available: 1996 February Displaced Worker and Job Tenure CPS Supplements; 1995 and 1997 February Contingent Worker CPS Supplement; 1994-1996 October School Enrollment CPS Supplement; 1992 Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP) 10 wave file; 1993 SIPP 9 wave file; 1996 SIPP Wave 1 file; and others.

The Ferret application will ask you to register your E-Mail address.  This is used for two purposes: 1) sending information back to the customer  on requested datasets and 2) the notification of updates. under revision

Health Facts for Montreal /  Données détaillées Montréal-Centre - (Montreal Region / CLSC / Municipalities) - (French).  It offers detailed statistics, graphics and maps for Montreal Health Region and CLSC subdivisions.  Major health and demographic indicators are offered.  An interesting comparison of Montreal and other Canadian urban health regions is provided. 

ICPSR:    Inter-university Consortium for Political & Social, Research
The Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research  (ICPSR), located within the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan, is a membership-based, not-for-profit organization serving member colleges and universities in the United States and abroad. ICPSR provides acccess to the world's largest archive of computerized social science data. McGill University is a member of the consortium.

ICPSR data is avaible to McGill's researches and students.  Data is avaible via the Electronic Data Resources Service.  Please contact Anastassia Khouri 

International Data Base (US Census Bureau) The International Data Base (IDB) is a computerized source of demographic and socio-economic statistics for all countries of the world.

Luxembourg Income Study (LIS)
The Luxembourg Income Study (LIS) is a non-profit cooperative research project with a membership that includes 25 countries on four continents: Europe, America, Asia and Oceania. 

The LIS database is a collection of household income surveys. These surveys provide demographic, income and expenditure information on three different levels: household, person and child.

Access to the LIS database is by electronic mail and is free to students and all LIS Member Country researchers.  To obtain access to the database, see: User Registration Rules and Forms.

The Luxembourg Employment Study (LES), a parent project of the LIS, includes Labour Force Surveys from countries with widely varied labour market structures.  These surveys provide detailed information on areas like job search, employment characteristics, comparable occupations, investment in education, migration, etc.

The LES datasets are freely available to anyone via the world wide web.  A directory of the databases can be found here.

Penn World Tables (Mark 5.6)(The Penn World Tables currently comprise data for 152 countries and 29 subjects (such as poplulation, GDP, Price level, exchange rates, etc.) with estimates of data for most countries up to 1992.

Provided by the City of Montreal, this resource (French only) gives a breakdown by borough of the immigrant and non immigrant populations of Montreal.  The data (in PDF format) include tables and graphs with accompanying text on the following socio-economic indicators: sex, family makeup, age group, ethnic origin, region and principal countries of origin, immigration period, knowledge of English and French, visible minorities, education, profession, rate of activity and of unemployment, revenue.  These data were prepared by the Montréal Centre for Inter-university Research on Immigration, Integration and Urban Dynamics.

The Roper Center for Public Opinion Research
The Roper Center maintains the world's largest archive of survey data. McGill also subscribes to their iPoll service, a powerful aid to locate national US public opinion polls containing questions on a particular subject. iPOLL contains 400,000 survey questions and answers asked in the US over the last 65 years by more than 150 survey organizations. Latin American Databank
The Latin American Databank at the Roper Center for Public Opinion Research locates, acquires, processes and archives public opinion surveys conducted by the survey research community in Latin America, including universities, institutes, individual scholars, private polling and public opinion research firms. To date, the LAD collection holds nearly one thousand studies from 16 countries, with the largest contributions coming from Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela.
Index of Investor Optimism
The UBS Index of Investor Optimism is the only ongoing survey of investor outlook in the United States and Europe. Introduced in 1996, the Index profiles individual investors on a monthly basis to ensure that their attitudes, perceptions and concerns are represented.

SHERLOCK - Sherlock is a cooperative project of the Quebec University libraries.  It is a common, bilingual infrastructure for the management, access and use of numerical data in Quebec University library network.  The project was developed with the support of CREPUQ (Conference of Rectors and Principals of Quebec) Library Subcommittee and participating academic libraries.

The collections of microdata sets are primarily from surveys conducted by various public institutions, including Statistics Canada.  The surveys focus on the social, economic, political, cultural and demographic aspects of Canadian or Quebec society.  Results from surveys in ICPSR (Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research) are also available.

The system's primary capabilities are survey inventory and description, consultation of accompanying documentation (codebooks), data transfer, and for certain surveys, extraction of data subsets and generation of statistics.

Access to the system is through a Web interface that provides a single gateway to all of the surveys for all users. The system was designed using a decentralized approach to encourage sharing of expertise and responsibilities. The terms in the data acquisition licenses of participating libraries are observed, and query interfaces are provided in French and English.

Statistical Profile of Canadian Communities(cities, towns, villages, Indian Reserves  &  Settlements, etc.)  information on education, income and work, families and dwellings, as well as  general population information. This data is designated as 'public use' by Statistics Canada, and thus is available to all users.

Statistics UNESCO & Statistical Year Book 1997-  Indicators & Selective tables from the 1997 Year Book  (Selective 11 tables out of 75 available online) Topics include: adult illiteracy rates, Circulation of daily newspapers per 1.000 inhabitants, Number of television receivers per 1.000 inhabitants, life expectancy number of years, Number of 3rd. level students per 100.000 inhabitants, Public expenditure on education as % of GNP, etc. under revision

STAT-USA/Internet- a service of the U.S. Department of Commerce, is the site for the U.S. business, economic and trade community, providing authoritative information from the Federal government. (access limited to McGill users only)

SYB World - Information from the Statesman's Yearbook online, including country profiles that cover political parties and leaders, population, economics, climate, natural resources, military capabilities, education and legal systems, culture and communications, health and environment, international affairs.  Also includes coverage of world events, biographies of key figures, special profiles of regions, states, and cities, as well as charts and tables on population, GDP per capita and Human Development Index, and extensive external links.  (access limited to McGill users only)

TRADE DATA ONLINE  Trade Data Online is  a customs-based international trade statistics with the latest trade data otained from Statistics Canada, the U.S. Department of Commerce and Eurostat/COMEXT.  This important source of information  is provided by Industry Canada through STRATEGIS
