Census 1986: Geographic Files - Data Formats and Documentation

      • Digital Cartographic Library
        • The Digital Cartographic Library is a library of computer files of standard Census boundaries. Each file includes geostatistical area boundaries and major hydrographic features.
        • The downloadable files are compressed into PKZIP® files (extension .ZIP) and contain data in ARC/Info® (.E00) and MapInfo® (.TAB, .ID, .MAP, .DAT) format.
        • User Guide

      • Federal Electoral District boundary file
      • Geographic Attribute File (GAF)
        • The GAF enables the user to obtain, for various geostatistical levels, a list of geographic areas that level with the Standard Geographical Code, the 1981 population adjusted to 1986 boundaries, the 1986 land area, the National Topographic System (NTS) map number and the 1986 final population.
        • The downloadable files are compressed into PKZIP® files (extension .ZIP) and contain data in ARC/Info®.

      • Place Name Master File (PNMF)
        • The Place Name Master File (PNMF) contains records for all census divisions, census consolidated subdivisions and census subdivisions and for those unicorporated places (UPs) for which 1986 populations was reported. Definitions of the various geographic levels are given in the field descriptions.
        • The downloadable files are compressed into PKZIP® files (extension .ZIP) and contain data in ARC/Info®.

      • Postal Code Conversion File (PCCF)
        • The Postal Code Conversion File (PCCF) provides a link between the six character postal code and the standard geographical areas for which Statistics Canada produces data.
        • The downloadable files are compressed into PKZIP® files (extension .ZIP) and contain data in Packaging Control File (.PCF) format.
        • User Guide
